The construction industry and GS1 standards

    Construction industry

Construction materials need a digital thread, from manufacturing to recycling. GS1 Romania helps you build it in advance.

    Industry story

How is the construction industry changing?

The construction industry is entering a new stage of digitalisation. Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 — the new CPR, which replaces Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 — introduces requirements for product identification, digital access to information and data transparency across the entire life cycle.

Every material needs a digital identity that is never lost, a thread that follows it from manufacturing to recycling. GS1 standards provide the infrastructure needed to make this possible, from the factory to the construction site and beyond, through maintenance, renovation or demolition.

Digital Product Passport is not just a legal obligation. It is the piece that connects your product to its digital thread, accompanying it throughout its entire life cycle, from manufacturing to demolition or recycling.

We are already working with the industry

GS1 Romania is currently running the national Sunrise 2027 pilot programme, with 60 companies from different industries, 12 of which are from construction and related industries. Together, we are testing the concrete impact of the new CPR regulations and developing practical implementation models. You can take part if you are a manufacturer, retailer, equipment or software provider, integrator, or simply interested in traceability and digitalisation in construction.  Get in touch — let's see together how your company fits in.

    What is changing?

The new European requirements for construction products

Digitalisation, sustainability and the circular economy are becoming an integral part of how products are placed and managed on the European market.

Declaration of Performance and Conformity (DoPC)

It will need to be available in digital format and automatically accessible.

    Sustainability information

Manufacturers will have to declare environmental indicators such as CO₂ emissions, water consumption and other relevant life-cycle data.

    Digital Product Passport (DPP)

Data on the use, safety, maintenance and recycling of products will be available digitally and accessible by scanning a QR code.

    Availability of spare parts

Manufacturers are required to ensure the availability of spare parts for 10 years.

    How does GS1 help you?

A common language for the entire industry

GS1 standards are the invisible infrastructure that connects the physical world with the digital one. They provide the foundation for unique product identification, traceability and interoperable data exchange, making the digital twin (BIM) and future smart construction ecosystems possible. From manufacturers and distributors to builders and authorities, everyone uses the same language to create a more transparent, efficient and connected supply chain.

    Unique, global identification

    • GTINfor products (the unique code of each material or product, the basis on which all further identification is built)
    • GLN  for companies, factories, warehouses and construction sites
    • GRAIfor returnable assets (scaffolding, containers, rented tools, so you always know where they are)
    • GIAIfor equipment and spare parts (a unique code per individual machine, from purchase to decommissioning)
    • SSCCfor logistics units (the pallet or shipping container, so you know exactly what arrived and where)

These identifiers become scannable through a single QR code, via GS1 Digital Link.

    BIM-compatible

GS1 and buildingSMART International have a global partnership so that GS1 standards integrate directly into BIM (Building Information Modeling) processes.

    Verifying product authenticity

Product data can be validated through the global GS1 registry, giving partners and authorities the ability to quickly verify their identity and authenticity.

    Standardised data exchange

Product information can be distributed through standardised networks such as GDSN, synchronising product data without manually exchanging files.   The movement of products on site and in the warehouse can be recorded through EPCIS, the standard that keeps a digital record of every step in the supply chain.

Digital Product Passport with a single scan

With GS1 Digital Link, a single QR code can provide access to the DPP, DoPC, assembly instructions, safety instructions, technical documentation and recycling and reuse information.

    • Declaration of Performance and Conformity (DoPC)
    • Assembly instructions
    • Safety instructions
    • Technical documentation
    • Recycling and reuse information

Beyond compliance: ready for the AI era

The Digital Product Passport is not intended only for people, but also for systems that automatically process product data. As AI-based tools become part of design, procurement and compliance processes, products with structured and standardised data will be easier to find, compare and recommend. ✓ Through GS1 standards and GS1 Digital Link, product information becomes intelligible to both people and digital systems.
